THURSDAY THREADS – PAN AM STYLE

Thursday November 17 2011.

If you missed it the first episodes of Pan Am which aired in the UK on BBC Two last night (set a reminder in your diary now) and guess what there was a wedding!  The plot  “Welcome to 1963: a time when only a lucky few could take flight, experience a global adventure or gain a front-row seat to history. Those lucky few flew Pan Am, the largest, most prestigious airline in the world. More than Coca-Cola, Elvis Presley or the transistor, Pan Am exported American culture to the world abroad and brought that world back to American shores.”

Less gloss than the women of Madmen, the Pan Am stewardesses are more real but with globetrotting jobs that were the envy of many.  However like Madmen before it, Pan Am is set to bring about a spotlight on 1960’s fashion.

I foresee a revival of all American early Sixties fashion items like the Pillbox hat popularised by Jackie Kennedy (and as you can see, part of the Pan Am uniform), short boxy jackets, nipped in waists on full skirted dresses, capri pants and short necklaces.

WEDDING ATTIRE

Bijou brides if you fell in love with Pan Am stewardess Laura’s wedding and her sister’s bridesmaid outfit here’s how to get the look.

Off the peg Sassi Holford‘s ‘Joanna’ dress is a near perfect version of Laura’s gown.

If you prefer a custom gown I highly recommend Oh My Honey for realising your vision and they have great dresses for bridesmaids too – remember perfect fit is key to this look.

I would love to see the wedding suit make a come back for brides, I found this stunning original 1960’s suit from U.S. seller Vintageous.
